A warm welcome: PGA induction days inspire Year 1 Trainees

For PGA Members looking to step up from day-to-day operations into more strategic leadership roles, the Director of Golf qualification offers a comprehensive pathway.

Combining academic insight with practical application, the course equips candidates with the skills to oversee all aspects of a golf facility, from finance and strategy to team development and emotional intelligence.

Ernie Lee undertook the programme to diversify from a primarily coaching-focused career, seeing it as a chance to expand his expertise. With a long-standing curiosity about leadership, operational planning, and the business side of golf, he was drawn to a qualification that promised real-world relevance as well as professional credibility.

Here, Lee describes his experience with the course and the benefits he is reaping from it.

What motivated you to enrol in the Director of Golf qualification?

I wanted to grow beyond just the coaching side of my work. I've always been interested in how golf facilities operate behind the scenes – the leadership, strategy, and operational elements – and this felt like the right step to build on that interest.

How would you describe the course content and structure?

It was well-structured and modular, mostly delivered online, which made it easy to fit around a busy schedule. The content struck a balance between academic theory and practical application, so I could immediately use what I was learning.

Which topics or modules did you find most valuable and why?

Leadership and financial management stood out. They changed the way I think about running a team and making long-term strategic decisions. It wasn't just about managing people; it was about leading with purpose.

Were there any unexpected elements?

Yes – the focus on emotional intelligence and team dynamics. I didn't expect it, but it's been incredibly useful. It's helped me improve communication and better support my team day to day.

How have you applied what you learned in your current role?

I've used it in planning, budgeting, and staff development. It's given me more confidence and clarity in my leadership decisions.

Has the qualification changed the way you lead or make decisions?

Definitely. I've moved from reacting to problems to anticipating and preventing them. That's been a big mindset shift.

What career benefits do you hope to gain?

I'd like to see it open up opportunities such as a GM role in the future, but even now it's improved how I approach my current responsibilities.

Who do you think the course is best suited to?

Head Pros, aspiring GMs, or anyone in the golf industry looking to take on more responsibility and think more strategically.

If you were to take the course again, what would you do differently?

I'd probably dive even deeper into some of the financial modules and case studies, now that I can see how directly relevant they are.

What was your biggest takeaway?

The shift from reacting to problems to anticipating and preventing them. It's changed how I lead and how I view my role.

What advice would you give to a PGA Member considering it?

Go for it. It's challenging, but you'll finish with a fresh perspective and a toolkit you can use straight away. It's a solid move for anyone serious about progressing in the golf industry, because it gives you the skills and mindset to lead effectively.
