A warm welcome: PGA induction days inspire Year 1 Trainees

Chris Dew, a proud Welshman who forged a successful career in Germany and served Rickenbach Golf Club for almost four decades, has passed away at the age of 67.

Chris inherited a passion for golf from his father, a longtime member at Creigiau Golf Club near Cardiff, and joined the PGA in 1974.

He completed his training at two nearby clubs, firstly Llanishen, then Whitchurch and was elected to Membership in 1977. Chris remained at Whitchurch until 1979 before heading north west and serving Pontypridd Golf Club for six years prior to moving to Germany.

Chris reasoned the experience of working abroad would help him land a job with a prestigious club in the UK, but his plans changed when he met Jenna his future wife.

The couple opted to stay in Germany and raise a family and Chris remained at Rickenbach Golf Club for the rest of his career until his untimely passing.

In addition to becoming an in-demand coach, Chris competed regularly in tournaments, including European Tour events and the Welsh National PGA Championship.

“As a player, Chris was not a big hitter, but he had an exceptional short game,” reflected Callum Dew, his son.

“And as a dedicated PGA Professional, he remained committed to the fundamentals of the game, emphasising the understanding of the golf swing without unnecessary complexity. He always believed in an upright swing. His wisdom, skill, and love for the game left a lasting impact on those he coached.”

Those included Callum, and his daughter Kelly, and Jenna, his wife, all of whom survive Chris and embark on family golf trips every year. The PGA extends heartfelt condolences to them on their loss.
