Matthew Cort (Beedles Lake Golf Club) secured his sixth Midland Open title with a score of 11-under-par (63, 68) after two days’ play at Copt Heath Golf Club in Solihull.
Cort said of his experience: “I was really looking forward to this event and I managed to score eight under on day one and then three under on day two, so managed to win by two shots - it's always tricky to finish off a tournament but I’m glad I got it done. It was nice coming down the last with a two-shot lead so I could just enjoy it - it was great.”
The tournament is part of The PGA’s Open Series, currently made up of seven tournaments, each with a prize fund of £20,000.
Alistair Waddell (Chorlton-cum-Hardy Golf Club) came in second place with a score of 9-under-par (67, 66) with 2024 English PGA Champion, Jamie Howarth (Davenport Golf Club) and James Whatley (Morley Hayes Golf) finishing in third at 8-under-par.
Having previously won the tournament in 2023, 2020, 2016, 2014 and 2013, it’s certainly a favourite for Cort: “The Midland Open is a great event, anytime you can win an Open around a great course is great, so I'm pretty thrilled actually.”
Cort praised the Harry Colt designed course at Copt Heath Golf Club, which is ranked in National Club Golfer’s Top 100 Courses: “It's one of the best in the Midlands, it's got a great history, it's held big tournaments in the past, it's a great vibe and it just rewards good, accurate play, there's lots of trees and trouble to negotiate, which I managed to do this week, so it's a great course.”
The Midland Open was also one of the Midlands’ Order of Merit tournaments, and Cort currently sits in pole position after also winning the Glazerite Trophy at Wellingborough Golf Club back in June.
