A warm welcome: PGA induction days inspire Year 1 Trainees

Matthew Cort (Beedles Lake Golf Club) secured his third Open Series tournament win of the year at the Midland Open, a 36-hole tournament which took place at Morley Hayes Golf Club.

After winning the East and North Region Open Series events earlier in the year, and with top five finishes at the South and West Region editions, it’s certainly a Series that suits Cort.

He said: “I’ve played five Open Series events - they’re good events. We play a lot of pro ams which are great, but there’s nothing like going head-to-head with your competitors in a pro-only event over two days, so I enjoy them.”

In the Midland Open, a first round score of one-under-par left Cort five shots back at the start of day two, but a second round 64 (eight-under-par) saw him climb to the top of the leaderboard, finishing with a final score of nine-under-par.

Cort added: “I had a bit of a slow start on day one, so I was too far back to guarantee a good finish, but today, I three-putted the first so I didn’t have a great start, but then holed some putts after that and then it happened really quickly - I was four-under after nine, then holed the second shot on the par four 10th for an eagle and suddenly had a really good score going, but I wasn’t aware of what the other guys were doing until I’d finished - sometimes I leaderboard-watch, but today I just thought, I’m playing nicely, just got to carry on and post a number.”

Daniel Brown (Sene Valley Golf Club), Paul Nessling (Precision Golf) and Jordan Godwin (Rochester & Cobham Golf Club) all finished in tied-second place with final scores of 8-under-par.
