Mendip Golf Club head pro Stuart Disney has welcomed the increase in playing opportunities for the PGA South West region’s senior members following a revamp of the Spring Sprint Series.
The four-event Series, which kicks off the season, has traditionally been contested by PGA Trainees and qualified pros aged 30 or younger but now includes a separate competition for Seniors.
And Disney, who turned 50 in February, has wasted no time in getting involved by playing in the first event at Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club. Furthermore, in doing so, he posted a three-under par round of 69 to win it by five shots.
Reflecting on his participation and the additional opportunities for Seniors to play, he said: “It’s the first time I’ve played competitively for about seven years, and I loved it out there.
“To see these events pop up on the calendar after I had turned 50 in February was brilliant. It’s a great initiative.
“I think it’s hugely important for senior Members to play as sometimes we can get bogged down in club life and forget about ourselves.”
In addition to welcoming the opportunity to play competitively, the event afforded him the chance to catch up with some old friends.
“I bumped into some people I hadn’t seen for 10 to 15 years,” he continued. “It was just like opening a book again and there was some great camaraderie.”
Disney also lauded the condition of the course after weeks of almost non-stop rain and added: “To present that golf course today in such a super state was excellent – all credit to everyone at Minehead and West Somerset for allowing us to play today.”
