Ed Goodwin recorded his first win of the Total Triumph-sponsored Gloucestershire and Somerset PGA Winter Series with a performance worth waiting for.

On a day at Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club when the sunny and wind-free weather matched greens in immaculate condition, Goodwin amassed 42 Stableford points to finish two clear of David Dixon.

In terms of birdies, Enmore Park’s Dixon upstaged his rival from Cirencester Golf Club, recording seven as opposed to the latter’s quintet.

The two-point difference that separated them, however, can be attributed to events at the par-five 16th, a hole that Goodwin eagled and Dixon registered a double bogey following a detour via the beach.

The 16th also proved the nemesis for 18-year-old Archie Walsh’s chances of victory. Walsh, a year one PGA Trainee attached to the host venue, recorded a bogey there to finish a shot adrift of Dixon in third place.

Meanwhile, Giuseppe Licata, the runaway Order of Merit leader, had a rare blank day. Not that his tied-11th finish with 33 points has been that detrimental to his substantial lead as he remains 58 points clear of his Filton Golf Club Assistant Mark Pitcher. Goodwin now lies third following his victory.
