A warm welcome: PGA induction days inspire Year 1 Trainees

Jonathan Grogan turned the tables on Tom Higson to win the Highland Golf Links 54-hole Pro-Am.

The Germany-based PGA pro had been runner-up to Higson in the three-day celebration of links golf last year but came out on top this time with a commanding win.

Grogan opened with a 66 at Nairn and followed it up with a 70 at Castle Stuart before finishing the job with a bogey-free five-under 65 at Royal Dornoch.

His 13-under tally left him four shots clear of defending champion Higson and was rewarded with a cheque for £6500.

Grogan’s final day assault started with a pair of birdies at the third and sixth before he fortified his position of authority with a run of three birdies in a row from the 12th.

Higson, who also won the Highland Golf Links title in 2020 and was runner-up in 2021, began his bid for a third crown with a sizzling 63 at Royal Dornoch which included a thrilling back nine of 29.

But subsequent rounds of 71 at Nairn and 70 at Castle Stuart left him trailing in Grogan’s wake.

The event had developed into a two horse race with the third place quartet of Darren Bragg, Scott Henry, James Ross and Graham Fox finishing five shots adrift of runner-up Higson.
