A warm welcome: PGA induction days inspire Year 1 Trainees

Tom Higson was back in a familiar position as he found himself leading the way after day one of the £40,000 Tomatin Highland Golf Links Pro-Am.

The Gleneagles pro has a fine record in this three-day rotation around a trio of wonderful courses and was the winner of the event in 2020 and the runner-up last year.

Here in 2022, Higson underlined his fondess for links golf in the north of Scotland as he opened his account with a charging seven-under 63 at Royal Dornoch.

One-under through eight holes, Higson’s round caught fire with an eagle on the ninth before a telling thrust of four birdies in a row from the 12th propelled him to the front.

At Castle Stuart, former Scottish PGA champion Ross Cameron got his campaign off to an eventful start and packed nine birdies into a six-under 66.

The foundations for a lively card were laid with three birdies on the trot from the first and, despite scribbling down three bogeys, Cameron's haul of gains more than made up for the blemishes.

Chris Doak, another past Scottish PGA champion, also finished on the six-under mark after a nicely assembled 64 at Royal Dornoch that was illuminated by four birdies and an eagle on the ninth.
