A warm welcome: PGA induction days inspire Year 1 Trainees

Wellingborough Golf Club duo Simon Lilly and club captain Glyn Pepper were crowned winners of the 2023 SkyCaddie PGA Pro-Captain Challenge after winning the event with an impressive score of 86 points.

Starting the final day in pole position, the Northamptonshire-based pair continued to build on their first round success at Argentario Golf & Wellness Resort (PGA National Italy), and even a rain delay couldn’t deter Lilly and Pepper from their goal.

“Glyn did fantastic, he had 4 net 3 on the par 4 16th and 3 net 2 on the par 3 17th, two of the toughest holes out there, which was huge,” said PGA Professional Lilly. We had a really good front 9, which got us off to a nice start, we just wanted to keep steady and keep the mistakes off.”

Pepper added: “I’m ecstatic - I knew we were doing okay but I had no idea where we were on the leaderboard until Simon hit his second shot into the last, and that’s when he told me! I had no idea until then - it’s brilliant, I’m so elated!

“The course has been absolutely fantastic, it really has. You have to think your way around it, and the sponsors, the hotel, the whole setup is fantastic, you can’t fault it at all. I would definitely recommend people come back here.”

Lilly echoed his partner’s comments about the tournament, adding: “It’s been a really good week. It’s been nice to get the juices flowing again, playing for some good money and we’ve had a great sponsor. The PGA have done a great job, it’s a great course - it’s the sort of course you can’t let up on, so we were just trying to keep focused on every hole and did the job!”

Nicholas Cains and club captain Sam Orlopp (Swaffham Golf Club) finished in second place with 84 points, whilst Alan Welsh and club captain John Hicks (Cathkin Braes Golf Club) came in third with 80 points.
