A warm welcome: PGA induction days inspire Year 1 Trainees

The OceanTee WPGA Series stopped at Crewe Golf Club this week and it was Heather MacRae (Gleneagles) who came out on top thanks to a bogey-free round of six-under-par (67).

MacRae finished five shots ahead of Rachel Bailey (Whittington Heath Golf Club) and Becky McGeehan (Royal Liverpool Golf Club) who finished in tied-second place on one-under-par.

MacRae was certainly in form at Crewe, as she explains: “There’s quite a few chances, but I’m glad I played a practice round yesterday because you definitely have to know where to hit it.

“I missed my first fairway on 18 so I drove it really well and for the first time all year I holed some putts, so it was nice. It was pretty stress free, I had a really nice group playing with the two Sophie’s, and it was nice to see the ball going in the hole.”

The 2024 Great Britain & Ireland Women’s PGA Cup team will now include the top two from the combined 2023/2024 OceanTee WPGA Series points list, and MacRae is eying up a spot on the team again.

She continued: “They’ve changed the qualifying process for the Women’s PGA Cup so that is definitely on my radar - although some of the events are a bit of a trek from Scotland it’s definitely worth playing, I think there’s two more left this year to play and hopefully I can play more next year as well - it’s nice to have OceanTee’s support and it’s my first win this year as well.”

Speaking about the OceanTee WPGA Series on the whole, MacRae added: “Having the mix of pro-ams, mixed events, one day series events and the championship is nice because it gives a variation of different competitions to play and they’re changing locations around the country as well, so it gives everyone a chance to get to some of them.”
