Alison Nicholas MBE and Cathy Panton-Lewis will fly the flag for the WPGA in the US Senior Women’s Open which starts at the NCR Country Club, Kettering, Ohio, tomorrow.
Panton-Lewis, a WPGA founder member and 14-time winner on the Ladies European Tour, will be playing in the event for the third time and booked her place in the event in spectacular style.
She holed a 25-foot putt to win a play-off in a qualifier at Charles River Country Club, Boston, Massachusetts, last month, and will tee off at 14.13 (UK time) alongside JoAnne Carner, and Noreen Mohler, an amateur.
Panton-Lewis, 67, assumed she was the oldest player in the qualifier but has no such worries in what is the tournament’s fourth staging.
Carner, an eight-time USGA Championship winner, is the oldest member of the 120-strong field at 83.
Meanwhile, Nicholas qualifies for the event by virtue of winning the 1997 US Women’s Open Championship. She tees off at 18.00 (UK time) alongside Hollis Stacy and Judith Kyrinis, an amateur.
She is one of three former Team Europe Solheim Cup captains in the field – Catriona Matthew, who celebrates her 53rd birthday during the tournament, and Annika Sorenstam are the others.
