A warm welcome: PGA induction days inspire Year 1 Trainees

The PGA North has announced its schedule for 2024 with Marriott Worsley Park once again kicking off the PGA Open Series.

The series involves seven 36-hole tournaments, played across all Great Britain & Ireland PGA regions, and it gets underway in Manchester on May 1. It was launched in 2022 to provide PGA Members access to top-level competition no matter where they are located, to encourage Member participation in regional tournaments and to improve prize fund opportunities.

Last year Matthew Cort claimed victory, one of three successes in the Series in 2023, as he shot rounds of 67-69 to beat Ben Hall by two with Michael Watson and Paul Nessling a further shot back.

Otherwise there are three Order of Merit events; the PGA North Region Championships at Chorley GC, the  Leeds Cup and the Lancashire Open. Last year Hurlston Hall’s Paul Kinnear topped the standings after a brilliantly consistent year – in five starts his worst finish was a tie for 14th.

The PGA North Region Championships will this year be held at Chorley GC on June 24-25 – last year Alex Belt barely missed a shot as he ran out a five-shot winner and he would also land the Lancashire Open which returns to Bolton Old Links on September 19-20.

In between the Leeds Cup will again be played on August 7-8 at Leeds Golf Club. In 2022 Daniel Croft put together back-to-back 65s for a two-shot win over Matthew Tottey and Kinnear. Croft would birdie the 16th and a pair of up-and-downs at the last two holes to seal a memorable triumph.

The Leeds Cup is the oldest trophy in professional golf that is still played for and Croft was delighted to get his hands on the trophy after a number of near misses.

“This is the biggest thing that I’ve ever won. The Leeds Cup is obviously very historic and it means a lot, I’ve played in it the last few years and I’ve always wanted to win it. I was fourth in 2022 but I’d never quite pulled it off," explained Croft after his win.

Also decorated around the 2024 schedule are a number of outstanding pro-ams which will include a handful of visits to Wales and some of the Principality’s finest courses.

The year begins and ends in Portugal at Quinta Do Lago again plays host to the Overseas Pro-Ams.
