A warm welcome: PGA induction days inspire Year 1 Trainees

David Dixon illuminated a misty day at Weston Super Mare with a sparkling back nine to record his first individual victory in the Total Triumph-sponsored Gloucester and Somerset PGA winter season.

The former European Tour member who represents Enmore Park posted a two-under par total of 68 to finish a shot clear of his playing partner, Cirencester Golf Club’s Ed Goodwin.

The pair were the only members of the 26-strong field to break par but, in doing so, experienced contrasting fortunes on the outward and inward halves.

Goodwin reached the turn in two-under to establish a four-shot lead over Dixon but three bogeys on the back nine tempered by a birdie at 17 sabotaged his hopes of victory.

As did Dixon on the inward stretch. Having reached the turn in two-over, he rediscovered his mojo on the way home by recording a quartet of birdies, the key one coming at 17 to match Goodwin and clinch outright victory.

Four players shared third spot after posting one-over par scores of 71: the host venue’s Ali Balcombe, Worlebury Golf Club’s Roy Baker, Josh Davies of Broadway Golf Club, and Bristol Golf Centre’s Prevan Nayanah-Rajh.

Meanwhile, Goodwin’s second place saw him continuing a rich vein of form which has helped him chip away at Giuseppe Licata’s lead in the Order of Merit. Two runner’s up spots and a first in his last three outings has resulted in him reducing Licata’s advantage to fewer than 50 points.
