A warm welcome: PGA induction days inspire Year 1 Trainees

Suzanne Dickens put her experience of teamwork from playing in the Women’s PGA Cup to good use by leading her trio of amateurs to victory in the OCEANTEE WPGA Ladies Pro-Am at Goodwood.

The trio comprising Suzanne Howard, Jodi Peggs and Cath Hunt are all members of Thorpe Wood Golf Course, Peterborough, where Dickens coaches.

And that camaraderie was evident as they racked up 83 Stableford points to finish two clear of the teams led by Zhane Mayo from Golf at Goodwood and The Berkshire’s Cathy Panton-Lewis.

“We travelled down yesterday, played nine holes on the course to practise and stayed overnight,” explained Dickens (above), a member of the 2019 and 2022 Great Britain and Ireland Women’s PGA Cup teams.

“The girls were excellent today. We gelled really well, especially on the par-three eighth hole where they all got threes to give us seven points and Susie (Howard) was nearest the pin. That helped our score as we were floundering a bit at the time.

“Most importantly, we’ve really enjoyed it even though the conditions have made the course really tough because it’s so dry and bouncy. We’ve enjoyed ourselves immensely, it’s been great fun.”

The event was contested by 14 teams, which was a healthy increase on last year when it was first staged and included two pros who will play in the US Senior Women’s Open later this month – Panton-Lewis and Alison Nicholas.

PGA Captain Sarah Bennett also entered a team and was delighted by the increase in participation.

“Last year was a little disappointing but as it was the first time we’d had a pro-am on the schedule I suppose that was inevitable," she said.

“This year’s response has been very encouraging and judging from the positive comments I’ve heard I’m hoping this event will go from strength to strength.”
